Sun 08, Ampthill 8 Bedford 5, Bedfordshire County Cup Final |
| |
Ampthill U14 played Bedford this Sunday the 8th March in the final of the Bedfordshire County Cup.
It was done the hard way with victories over both Biggleswade and last years winners Dunstable in the knock out stages then last years finalists Bedford at the neutral ground of Luton RFC.
Amps were led by Captain Josiah Herbert who together with the rest of the pack dominated Bedford in the tight and loose however Bedford's defence held firm. The only score was a well taken penalty by fly half William Hunt despite a near gale force wind.
With just 4 mins to go and completely against the run of play Bedford scored a break away try from inside their 22 when the ball was judged by the linesman to have left the feet of the Ampthill 8 in the scrum and was pounced on by the Bedford 9 who ran the 80m to score and put them in the lead 3-5.
With only 4 min`s left on the clock a quick re-start deep in to the Bedford 22 was fumbled into touch for an Amps Lineout leading to another couple of scrums before lock Michael Bailey made a looping attack breaking the gain line to offload to wing Chay Lowden who broke through two defenders to win the game with an unconverted try
Ampthill U14s gained promotion the previous week with a 52-10 win over Barnet RFC in the penultimate game of the league season and are left to defend the title of East Midlands Champions 2008/2009 when the U14 age group is hosted at Dillingham Park on March 22nd.
Scrum half Aaron Orsborn left the field with a broken collarbone early in to the second half after his constant pressure saw his opposing number replaced.
Tight head Nathan Horn received Man of the match in game where he dominated the Bedford scrum that contained their Northampton Saints EPDG prop while also collecting the majority of line out ball, he had previously out scrumaged both the Dunstable and Biggleswade front rows. Nathan has made his point to the Bedfordshire and East Midlands selectors while the U14s celebrate having beaten every East Midlands team in the last two seasons while collecting all the trophies on the way!
Ampthill are well represented in the Bedfordshire County team who play Hertfordshire B this Wednesday night.
