Following a recent committee meeting it has been decided that all future correspondence will take place via email. Many congratulations to the unbeaten Blue Boar XV who for the first time has won the Oxfordshire Shield comprehensively beating Oxford Rugby Club 27-8 at Iffley Road in early April. This was preceded by a heroic 12-8 victory over Bicester in the semi-final and a surprisingly tight quarter final victory over Wheatley.
The Oxfordshire Shield is open to the smaller clubs in Oxfordshire and is a wonderful opportunity for the club to put out its strongest available side which complements the friendly fixtures that the club continues to play.
The Blue Boar has for many years given opportunities to players who, for one reason or another, are unable or unwilling to play regular Saturday rugby. It also caters for a number of students many of whom are sons of former players. Brian Kentish has remained very true to the club ethos that playing members should be regular visitors to the pub and very much part of a team.
The fact is the Blue Boar rugby should be applauded. At a time of relentless leagues the players thoroughly enjoy the serious approach but relaxed Barbarian style of rugby. Those of us who watched the semi final and final can only applaud the magnificent spirit, determination and quality of the rugby.
Our thanks as always go to Brian Kentish for the outstanding work he puts in raising teams and sorting out the endless administration. Quite simply Blue Boar rugby would not be the same without Brian. Many of you will know that Brian’s wife Nina was involved in a serious car crash earlier this year which resulted in a broken neck and back. After a long stay in the hospital she is recently spotted at the pub albeit in a hefty head brace. Nina has always been a great help to Brian, not least on the relentless shirt washing stakes, and we wish her a full recovery.

Boar Stoop to conquer 2008

Oxford 8, Blue Boar 27
Blue Boar roared to victory in the Oxfordshire Shield with a dominant second-half display orchestrated by their impressive fly half Sam Stoop.
Boar's first county success may appear something of an upset, but it was their ninth victory in nine matches this season.
Captain James Brufell lost the toss, but revealed Oxford had played into their hands by opting to have the wind behind them in the first half.
Oxford dominated the opening quarter, but lacked a real cutting edge.
They had plenty of opportunities as Stoop and full back Chris Sandbach struggled to clear the ball for Boar.
A mixture of determined defence and poor execution left the game scoreless, while Boar took 19 minutes to mount a decent attack.

Wings Charlie Young and Sam Cover had their moments, but it was Oxford who took the lead on 27 minutes.
Full back Graham Crapper and Longuet-Higgins combined well and centre Tom Olley was on hand to finish the move.
Unfortunately for Oxford, they were penalised from the restart and Boar levelled with flanker Barney Harrison peeling over from the lineout.
Boar couldn't make further inroads and saw Olley kick a stoppage-time penalty, but trailing just 8-5, they were well-placed at half-time.
The second half had barely started when Cover touched down Sandbach's excellent grubber kick.
Boar's greater skill level in the backs was starting to show and their third try came on 53 minutes when scrum half George Sykes latched on to a fine break from hooker Jamie Orpwood.
Stoop still couldn't land a conversion, but he more than made up for this with a superbly-executed score after 62 minutes.
Centre Ben Nicholl's off-load was assured and so was Stoop's finish before he added the conversion.
Oxford had run out of ideas by now and failed to capitalise on several penalties.
Sykes had another decent break for Boar, but the ball was turned over.
Nicholl had the final say, powering over for a deserved try that capped their comeback.
Had Oxford taken their early chances it could have been different, but Boar proved they are more than just a pub side.

Blue Boar Sports Dinner 2008
This has now taken place for 4 consecutive years and continues to be an enjoyable evening despite the occasional hiccup. This year our guest speaker was ex-England flyer David Trick. Although not the best known player he has always enjoyed a reputation of being one of the best speakers on the circuit. He lived up to his billing and was supported by a local comedian (who is not the guy we thought we had booked!). The highlight however was the appearance of ex-Bath and England coach Jack Rowell who came as a guest of another member. Jack is a larger than life character and a hugely successful businessman with a very sharp wit and he couldn’t resist getting up to say a few words. He also presented a fiftieth Cap to Nigel Cox. In fact Jack quite seriously stated that “it was one of the most enjoyable rugby club dinners he had ever attended”. He commented that it was a pleasure to get away from the corporate feel and to be amongst genuine grass root rugby players – praise indeed.
Blue Boar Sports Dinner 2007
The ever popular event was again held at Carswell Golf and Country Club this year and featured Gordon Hunter who played scrum-half for Scotland in their 1984 Grand Slam year and Brian Voyle-Morgan who has been a scriptwriter for a number of TV shows including The Two Ronnies and Have I Got News For You.
Ted Sandbach organised the occasion with his customary effectivness and Paul Dailey, club president, MC'ed in his inimitable style.

Last year's Blue Boar Sports Dinner was held at Carswell Golf and Country Club on March 7th , 2006, greatly enjoyed by all who
attended. The guest speaker for the evening was Phil Bennett who was tremendous value. As was Jerry Thomas, our favourite
Gloucester comedian who entertained us every bit as much as he did last year. Not sure if he used any of the same jokes but
it wouldn't matter if he did because no-one would remember anyway. Ted Sandbach was the org
anizer. Paul Dailey, club president, was the MC. Much thanks to both of them from everyone who was there for a great job well done.
